Flickering LED lights — causes and solutions

LED lights usually flicker because the dimmer was not made for LED, the driver does not match the lamps, or a connection is loose. Switch to an LED-rated dimmer and dimmable lamps. If whole rooms or the whole home flicker, it may be an electrical fault — call an electrician.

The short answer

Flickering LED lights are in most cases caused by a dimmer that is not designed for LED, by a driver that does not match the lamps, or by a loose connection somewhere in the chain. The fix is usually an LED-rated dimmer — generally a trailing-edge model — together with dimmable lamps tested to work with it. But if the lighting flickers in whole rooms or throughout the home, the cause may be a fault in the electrical installation — then you should call a certified electrician rather than keep changing bulbs.

Why LED is more sensitive than the old incandescent bulb

An incandescent bulb was in effect a glowing resistor — slow and forgiving of small variations in the supply. An LED lamp is electronics: light-emitting diodes fed by a driver that converts the mains voltage. It reacts instantly, and small disturbances the old filament simply smoothed out can become visible flicker. That is why problems often appear precisely when you swap old bulbs for LED in an existing installation.

Flicker is also not only what you see. Even rapid flicker that the eye does not consciously register can feel tiring during reading and work. Quality lamps state their flicker performance in the specifications — one reason not to choose the very cheapest bulbs for places where you spend a lot of time.

The dimmer is the most common culprit

Older dimmers were built for the high, steady load of incandescent bulbs. An LED lamp draws a fraction of that power — often less than the dimmer's minimum working load — and the result is flicker, humming, or lamps that cannot be dimmed low without blinking.

Dimmers also work in different ways. Leading-edge dimmers, often older and made for incandescent bulbs and iron-core transformers, cut the start of the voltage curve. Trailing-edge dimmers cut its end and give a softer start — most LED lamps do best with trailing-edge technology, and serious manufacturers state explicitly which dimmer type and models a lamp has been tested with. A modern LED dimmer also has an adjustable minimum level, which removes the flicker at the bottom of the dimming range.

A common symptom of the wrong dimmer type is lamps that blink or cut out entirely at the lowest setting but behave further up — or a humming noise from the dimmer or the lamps. Both point to a mismatch between load and technology.

Other causes: drivers, loose connections and mains disturbances

Spotlights and lighting runs are often fed by a shared driver. If it is ageing, undersized or the wrong type for the lamps, the whole run can flicker or blink out of step. Replacing it with an LED driver, correctly sized for the number of lamps, often solves the problem in one go.

Loose connections are another classic: a lamp that flickers when you touch the fitting, or when someone walks heavily across the room, points to a poor contact — in the lamp holder, in the fitting's terminal block or in a junction box. First switch off the power and try screwing the bulb in properly once it has cooled. If that does not help, the connections should be checked by an electrician, because loose joints generate heat.

Flicker can also come from outside the lighting circuit. Brief voltage dips when high-power appliances start — the heat pump, the tumble dryer, the cooker — can make the lights blink. If it always coincides with one particular appliance starting, mention it to the electrician: it can indicate a heavily loaded circuit or a weak connection that should be put right.

When flicker is a warning sign

A single flickering lamp is a compatibility or contact problem. But if the lighting flickers or pulses in whole rooms or throughout the home — especially independently of any dimmers, if lamps swing brighter and dimmer in waves, or if appliances misbehave at the same time — the cause can be serious, such as a loose neutral or a poor connection in the supply.

That is not something to investigate yourself. Switch off sensitive equipment, never touch wiring or the inside of the consumer unit, and call a certified electrician straight away — where there is smoke or a burning smell, call 112 first. If your neighbours' lights are blinking too, the fault may lie in the grid, and then your network operator is the one to contact.

Choosing the right LED and dimmer combination

A proven approach is to start from the dimmer: pick a modern LED dimmer with a published compatibility list, then buy lamps from that list — not the other way around. That spares you the trial and error. Remember that replacing the dimmer itself is work on the fixed installation and must be done by an authorised electrical company; the bulbs, on the other hand, you change yourself — with the power off and once they have cooled.

Smart lighting — an alternative to the dimmer hunt

One way to sidestep the compatibility question entirely is smart lighting: smart lamps and drivers are dimmed via an app, a wireless remote or voice control, and handle the regulation internally in their electronics. No wall dimmer needs to match the lamp. In existing lamp holders you can often switch to smart bulbs yourself, while permanently installed solutions — built-in drivers, smart switches in the wall — must be installed by a certified electrician.

Smart lighting is a particularly good fit for rooms where you want scenes and schedules, or where the existing dimmer and fitting refuse to get along. An electrician can help you choose a solution that works with your installation rather than against it.

Common questions

Are flickering LED lights dangerous?
Usually not — flicker in a single lamp is generally a mismatch between dimmer, driver and bulb, which is irritating but rarely dangerous. The exceptions matter: if lighting flickers in whole rooms or across the home, or if the flicker comes with heat, a burnt smell or crackling sounds, it can indicate a serious fault such as a loose neutral or failing connections. Call a certified electrician then — and where there is smoke or fire risk, always 112 first.
Why does my LED glow faintly even when the switch is off?
Some dimmers and switches — for example those with a built-in indicator light — let a very small current through even in the off position. Incandescent bulbs never showed it, but an efficient LED can glow or blink faintly on that little. The phenomenon is usually harmless but annoying. The fix is most often an LED-compatible dimmer or switch, sometimes a small adjustment in the fitting — a quick job for a certified electrician.
Can I replace the dimmer myself?
No. The dimmer is part of the fixed electrical installation, and that work must be carried out by an electrical installation company registered with Elsäkerhetsverket. As a private individual you may change the bulbs themselves — do it with the power off and let them cool first.
