Some electrical faults are obvious. Others come and go – and those are the ones we are most often asked to find. The RCD that trips in the middle of the night with no visible pattern. The lamp that only flickers sometimes. The socket that works in the morning but not in the evening. Behind almost every recurring fault, though, there is a pattern – and the pattern points to the cause.

If the RCD trips when it rains, moisture in an outdoor installation is the most common explanation. If it trips when a particular machine is working, a developing earth fault in that machine is the likely cause. Flickering lights and sockets that seem to have a life of their own usually come down to a loose connection in a terminal or junction box – a fault that also generates heat. Fuses that blow under heavy load may simply mean overload, but can also indicate cable damage that only shows itself as the current rises.

One symptom deserves special mention: if you feel tingling or small shocks from a tap, a handle or an appliance, the installation should be checked without delay. Stop using the equipment and call straight away.

How a fault-finding job works

Fault-finding is a process of elimination – systematic and measurable, never guesswork. We work in five steps.

What you can do yourself – and where the limit is

The most useful thing you can do is observe. Note down when the fault occurs, what the weather was like and which appliances were running. A simple fault diary like that can shorten the fault-finding considerably. You can also unplug appliances one at a time and try resetting the RCD between each – if the fault disappears with one particular appliance unplugged, you have probably found the culprit without opening a single box.

That is also where the limit runs. Opening junction boxes, taking measurements in the fixed installation or loosening conductors in the consumer unit is not work for private individuals – under current Swedish regulations it may only be done by a registered electrical installation company, and the measurements require both instruments and training to be safe and meaningful. Never touch exposed conductors, and never assume that a switched-off fuse means everything is dead. Elsäkerhetsverket, the Swedish Electrical Safety Board, explains what you may do yourself.

Common questions about fault finding

Why does the RCD trip when it rains?
Because moisture lowers insulation resistance. When rain gets into outdoor sockets, garden lighting, engine-heater outlets or outdoor junction boxes, a leakage current flows to earth – exactly what an RCD is designed to react to. Try unplugging everything connected outdoors and reset the device. If the problem persists, or returns with the next rain, you need fault-finding with insulation-resistance testing – that pinpoints which circuit, and which part of the installation, is letting current through.
How does professional electrical fault-finding work?
Systematically, in a set order. First the history: when does the fault occur, and under what conditions? Then narrowing down at the consumer unit, disconnecting circuits one at a time until the fault can be isolated. Next comes measurement – insulation-resistance and load testing – which shows where wiring or appliances deviate from normal. Finally the fault is repaired or safely disconnected, and you get a clear account of what was found, what was measured and what we recommend.
Can I do some fault-finding myself before calling an electrician?
Partly. You can unplug appliances one at a time to see whether the fault disappears, reset a tripped fuse or RCD once, and note when and how the fault occurs – observations like that help a great deal. What you must not do is open junction boxes, take measurements in the fixed installation or work inside the consumer unit; under current regulations that work is reserved for registered electrical installation companies. What is insulation-resistance testing and why is it needed?
Insulation testing measures the resistance of the wiring's insulation – between conductors and to earth – using a dedicated instrument on a disconnected part of the installation. Low readings reveal moisture, aged insulation or mechanical damage long before a fault is visible from the outside. It is the standard method for finding the cause of a tripping RCD, and the results also show whether a cable run needs replacing or simply needs to dry out and be re-checked.
Why do the lights in my house flicker sometimes?
If one lamp flickers, it is usually the lamp or its driver. If several rooms flicker at once, the more likely causes are a loose connection, a heavily loaded circuit or, at worst, a neutral fault – especially if the flicker coincides with appliances starting. If the whole house blinks and there is also a burnt smell or clicking from the consumer unit, call immediately. If the whole street is affected, it is a matter for the network operator rather than your installation.
